I'd suggest that you start with something smaller, with more meaning and then build up to something larger.
I've been contemplating a half sleeve with meaning for ages now.

I've been wanting to get a 3/4 sleeve for quite some time. But it seems life always gets in the way. I found this great artist that charges $500/day rather than the usual $150/hr. He figures I would need at least 2 full day sittings and maybe more. At this time I don't have $1000-$1500 at my disposal for a new tat but one day I'll make it happen.

Make sure to take a look at his portfolio to make sure his rate is worth paying, and always know for sure what you want to get. There are plenty of artists out there to pick from!
